Mr Simon Abram

Simon Abram is a Consultant Specialist Knee Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at University of Bristol and North Bristol NHS Trust. He graduated from Oxford University (Christ Church) in 2010 and began his registrar training on the leading UK run-through orthopaedic programme in Glasgow in 2012. In 2016-19, he returned to Oxford University and completed a DPhil (PhD), evaluating treatment indications for the management of meniscal injuries. A key output from his thesis was the publication of the current UK national guidelines for meniscal tear investigation and management. Following his PhD, Simon completed his orthopaedic training on the Oxford rotation.In 2023, Simon was one of only two surgeons awarded a BORS/BJR travelling fellowship across North America, visiting and learning from leading clinical and academic centres in Colorado, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Ottawa. Subsequently, Simon was selected to the sub-specialty knee arthroplasty and soft tissue reconstruction fellowship in Exeter, and the sports knee fellowship at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, before taking up his appointment to specialist practice in Bristol.Mr Abram is a clinical academic and has published more that 40 scientific publications in journals including the Lancet, BMJ, and both the British and American Journals of Sports Medicine. His work has been awarded multiple prizes and grant awards in excess of £1.6m. His current research interests include the use of innovative technology, AI and large datasets to improve surgical planning and the precision of orthopaedic interventions. He is a member of the national BASK Meniscal Working Group and Joint Preservation Working Group, and Specialty Editor for Knee at the Bone and Joint Research journal. Mr Abram’s clinical practice is fully elective, in all aspects of sports knee surgery and ligament reconstruction, joint preservation, and personalised joint replacement.
